Preposition (முன்னிலைச் சொற்கள்)
A preposition is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun, to show in what relation the person or thing denoted by it stands in regard to something else. The word preposition means 'that which is placed before'.
(முன்னிலைச் சொல் ஒரு பெயர்ச்சொல் அல்லது பிரதிப்பெயர்ச் சொல்லுக்கு முன் அமைந்து, பெயர்ச் சொல் (அ) பிரதி பெயர்ச்சொல் குறிக்கும் நபர் (அ) பொருள் மற்ற ஒன்றுடன் கொண்டிருக்கும் தொடர்பை உணர்த்துவதாகும்.)
Examples:
i) The book is on the table.
புத்தகம் மேஜையின் மேல் உள்ளது
ii) He came with me
அவன் என்னுடன் வந்தான்
In the first sentence, the preposition 'on' indicates the relative position of the book and the table. In the second example, the preposition with indicates the relative position of 'he' and "me'.
முதல் எடுத்துக்காட்டில் முன்னிலைச் சொல் 'on' புத்தகத்திற்கும். மேசைக்குமுள்ள தொடர்பைக் குறிப்பிடுகிறது. இரணடாவது எடுத்துக்காட்டில் With அவனுக்கும் எனக்குமுள்ள தொடர்பைக் குறிப்பிடுகிறது.
Types of Prepositions (முன்னிலைச் சொற்களின் வகைகள்)
a) Simple preposition - எளிய முன்னிடைச் சொல்at - இல், விதம், by - ஆல், for - அதற்காக , from - இருந்து, in - உள்ளே , of - உடைய , off - அப்பால் , on - மேல், out - வெளியே , through - வழியாக , till - வரை, to - க்கு, up - மேலே , with - ஆல், ஓடு, உடன்
b) Compound preposition - கூட்டு முன்னிடைச் சொல்
They are generally formed by prefixing a preposition to a noun, an adjective, or an adverb.
கூட்டு முன்னிடைச் சொல் பொதுவாக noun (அ) an adjective or an adverb உடன் கூட்டு முன்னிடைச் சொல்லின முறை சேர்க்கையாகவரும்.

Phrase prepositions are groups of Words used with the force of a single preposition.

d) Participle prepositions
Barring, concerning, during, not withstanding, pending, regarding, respecting, touching and a few similar words (which are present participle words) are used without any noun or pronoun being attached to them.
Several words are used sometimes as adverbs and sometimes as prepositions. A word is a preposition when it governs noun or pronoun, it is an adverb when it does not.
சில சொற்கள் சில நேரங்களில் Adverb ஆகவும், சில நேரங்களில் Preposition ஆகவும் பயன்படுகின்றன.
ஒரு சொல் noun (அ) pronoun ஐ தழுவி வருவது Preposition ஆகும். அவ்வாறு இல்லாவிடில் அவை Adverb ஆகும்.
The uses of some common prepositions:

1. in - நாடுகள், பெரிய நகரங்களைக் குறிப்பிட வருடங்கள் மாதங்களுடன் குறிப்பிட
2. at - கிராமங்களுக்கு முன், நிலையாயுள்ள பொருள்களுடன், குறிப்பிட்ட நேரத்தைக் குறிக்க
3. into - அசைவுகளைக் குறிக்கும், மிகவும் உட்பகுதி
4. Till - is used of time
5. with - ஆல், ஓடு, உடன்
