Conjunctions (இணைப்புச் சொற்கள்)
A conjunction is a word that joins words or sentences together. (வார்ததைகளை அல்லது வாக்கியங்களை இணைக்க உதவும் இணைப்புச்சொல் conjunction ஆகும்.)
Examples:
i) Two and two make four
இவ்வாக்கியத்தில் Two, two என்ற இரு சொற்களை and என்ற conjunction இணைக்கிறது.
ii) I ran fast but I missed the train.
இதில் I ran fast என்பது ஒரு வாக்கியம். I missed the train என்பது மற்றொரு வாக்கியம். இரண்டு வாக்கியங்களையும் but என்ற conjunction இணைக்கிறது.
Classes of conjunction (இணைப்புச் சொல்லின் வகைகள்)
а) Correlative conjunctions - இணையாகப் பயன்படும் இணைப்புச் சொற்கள்They are used in pairs.
Examples:
i) He visited not only Agra, but also Delhi.
ii) It is neither gold nor silver.
கீழ்க்கண்ட சொற்கள் இணையாகப்பயன்படக் கூடிய இணைப்புச் சொற்களாகும்.
1. either ... or - இரண்டில் ஒன்று
2. neither ... nor - இரண்டுமில்லை
3. Both ... and - இரண்டும் சேர்ந்து
4. Though ... yet - இருந்த போதிலும்
5. Whether .... or - இதுவா அதுவா
6. not only.... but also - அதுமட்டுமில்லை அதுவும் கூட
b) Compound conjunctions - (கூட்டு இணைக்கும் சொற்கள்)
Compound conjunctions are used as compound expressions.
Examples: in order that நோக்கத்துடன்
i) The notice was published in order that all might know the facts.
கீழ்க்கண்ட சொற்கள் Compound conjunction ஆகா பயன்படுகின்றன.
ii) Even if - இருந்தாலும்
iii) So that - காரணத்திற்காக
iv) Provided that - நிபந்தனையின் பேரில்
v) As though - போல
vi) As well as - கூட. மேலும்
vii) As soon as - உடனேயே
viii) As if - போல
c) Co-ordinating conjunction - சமமான இணைப்புச்சொல்
A co-ordinating conjunction joins together clauses of equal rank.
It contains two independent statements or two statements of equal rank or importance.
A conjunction joins, together these two statements.
Examples: Birds fly and fish swim.
இதில் birds fly, fish swim போன்றவை இரு சம வாக்கியங்கள் இவற்றை and என்ற இணைப்புச் சொல் ஒன்றாக இணைக்கிறது. And, but, for, or, nor, also, either... or, neither... nor போன்றவை முக்கிய co-ordinating இணைப்புச் சொற்களாகும்.
ii) Sub - ordinating conjunction - சார்ந்து இருக்கும் இணைப்புச்சொல்
It contains two statements or clauses. But, one is dependent on the other. A Conjunction joins together.
இதில் இரு வாக்கியங்கள் உள்ளன. ஒன்று. மற்றொன்றை சார்ந்து உள்ளன. இவற்றை இணைக்கும் இணைப்புச் சொல்லே sub-ordinating conjunction ஆகும்.
A subordinating conjunction joins a clause to another on which it depends for its full meaning.
Examples:
When he was crossing the road, he met with an accident.
இதில் when he was crossing the road என்பது ஒரு Subordinate clause ஆகும். இதில் வாக்கியம் முடியவில்லை. இவ்வாக்கியம் பின் வாக்கியத்தைச் சார்ந்துள்ளது. இதில் முதலில் வரும் when என்ற சொல் subordinating conjunction ஆகும்.
After, because, if, that, though, although, till, before, unless, as, when, where, while போன்றவவை முக்கிய subordinate conjunctions ஆகும்.
