Past Tense - இறந்த காலம்
(A) Simple past - சாதாரண இறந்த காலம்
a) இறந்த காலத்தில் நடைபெற்ற செயலைக் குறிப்பிட ....
An action which completed in the past.
E.g.: i) I wrote a letter yesterday.
நான் நேற்று ஒரு கடிதம் எழுதினேன்
ii) She bought a T.V. last week.
அவள், சென்ற வாரம் ஒரு தொலைக்காட்சியை வாங்கினாள்
b) கடந்த காலத்தில் நடைபெற்ற செயல்கள், நிகழ்க்சிகள் போன்றவற்றைக் குறிப்பிட
to mention the past actions, incidents etc.
E.g.: i) Asoka was a great king.
அசோகர் ஒரு பெரிய அரசர்
ii) India got independence on August 15, 1947.
இந்தியா 1947 ஆகஸ்ட் 15ல் சுதந்தரம் பெற்றது.
Formula: Past tense of verb
Keywords: Yesterday, last, ago, once, one day, past years, past year action, past incidents etc.

3. Two days ago we -------- (go) picnic to Kodaikanal.

B. Past Continuous: இறந்தகால தொடர்
a) An action which was progressive in the past time
இறந்த காலத்தில் தொடர்ந்து நடைபெற்ற செயலைக் குறிப்பிட.
E.g.: i) He was sleeping throughout last night.
ii) We were seeing a cricket match all day.
b) இறந்த காலத்தில் ஒரு செயல் தொடர்ந்து நடைபெறும் போது, இன்னொரு செயல் குறுக்கிட்டால்,
குறிக்கிடாத செயலைக் குறிப்பிட.
E.g.: i) When the boy was crossing the road, he fell down.
ii) While she was sleeping, she heard a loud noise.
Formula: was
Were + verb + ing
Keywords: when, while, through out, all night, all day.
Exercise:

2. It started to rain while they ------- (play) Hockey.
3. When I lived in Chennai. I --------(go) to cinema once a week.
4. While the teacher ----- (teach) the bell rang.
(C) Past perfect - இறந்த கால முற்று
a) இறந்த காலத்தில் இரு செயல்கள் நடைபெற்றால், அதில் முதி) செயலைக் குறிப்பிட past perfect உம்,
இரண்டாவது செயலைக் குறிப்பிட Simple past உம் வரும்.
E.g.: i) We studied well after the teacher had advised
ii) I had seen the Taj mahal before I went to Delhi.
Formula: had + been + past participle of verb
Keywords: that, after, before

(D) Past perfect continuous - இறந்த கால முற்றுத் தொடர்
இறந்த காலத்தில் தொடர்ந்து நடைபெற்றுக் கொண்டிருக்கும் செயலைக் குறிப்பிடும்.
E.g.: i) The telephone had been ringing for 10 minutes till it was answered.
ii) He had been writing a novel for 2 months.
Formula: Had + been + verb + ing
