Participle - வினையெச்சம்
Participle is a word which is partly a verb and partly an adjective. It may be called a verbal adjective.
வினைச்சொல்லாகவும், பெயருரிச்சொல்லாகவும் பயன் படுகின்ற சொல்லை
வினையெச்சம் (Participle) என்பர். இதனை verbal adjective எனவும் அழைப்பர்.
Definition: A participle is that form of the verb which partakes of the nature of both a verb and of
an adjeective.
எ.கா i) Ram is driving a car.
ii) The car driven by Rama dashed against a tree...
இதில் driving முடியாத செயலைக் குறிப்பிடுகிறது. Driven என்பது ஒரு முடிந்த செயலைக்
குறிப்பிடுகிறது.
எனவே வினையெச்சம் ingல் முடிந்தால், அவை முடிவடையாத செயலைக்
குறிப்பிடுவதால் அவை நிகழ்கால வினையெச்சம் (present participle) எனக் கூறுவர்.
வினையெச்சம் -ed, - en, - d, மற்றும் -t முடிந்து முடிந்த செயலைக் குறிப்பிடுமாயின்
அவை (past participle) இறந்தக்கால வினையெச்சம் என்பர்.
Exercise:

9. They heard the people ringing the bells.
10. Lessons learnt easily are soon forgotten.
